Two of the most underrated vocations on Rookery Isles, Handicrafts builds jewelry, instruments, fishing gear and house decor; Printing makes paper, books, and the language manuals that let you finally understand the other faction.
Requirements
This craft itself has no character-level requirement. You can smelt, process, and craft at any level if you have the materials. The catch on Rookery Isles is that the raw materials come from world gathering (Mining, Logging, Gathering, Farming, Husbandry, Fishing), and all of those are gated at Character Level 52, so in practice a self-supplied crafting career begins at Level 52. You can still craft earlier from purchased or traded materials.

What These Two Vocations Cover
Rookery Isles runs ArcheAge 3.0 "Revelation" (the AAEmu 3.0.3.0 NL0bP fork, schema aaemu_game_3030, live client dated 2017-03-15). Across all 22 player vocations, Handicrafts and Printing sit in the Crafting tab of your proficiency window, alongside Alchemy, Cooking, Machining, Metalwork, Masonry, Tailoring, Leatherwork, Weaponry and Carpentry.
Where the armor/weapon vocations feed your power score directly, these two are the "everything else" crafts:
- Handicrafts (587 recipes) makes accessories (necklaces, earrings, rings), lunagems (the socketable stat stones), musical instruments for Songcraft and ambient play, fishing rods, hooks, lures and traps, and a large catalogue of house decor, vases, lanterns, teapots and lighting frames.
- Printing (109 recipes) makes paper (a base material other crafts consume), regrade scrolls, spellbooks, lore books and journals, and, most importantly for roleplayers, the language books that teach your character to read and speak the opposing faction's tongue.
Both are accessible from the very start of the game. Most recipes in both vocations have no proficiency gate at all; the gating that exists kicks in only on top-tier accessories, high-rank lunagems, regrade scrolls and the language book itself.
If you want the broader picture of how every vocation, station and processing chain connects, start with the Crafting Guide. This article goes deep on these two.
Proficiency, Labor & Gates
Both vocations use the same shared proficiency ladder as the rest of the game. You earn proficiency by spending labor on recipes; ranks unlock higher-tier recipes. The full ladder (verified from expert_limits):
| # | Rank | Up to | # | Rank | Up to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Amateur | 10,000 | 7 | Champion | 90,000 |
| 2 | Novice | 20,000 | 8 | Adept | 110,000 |
| 3 | Veteran | 30,000 | 9 | Herald | 130,000 |
| 4 | Expert | 40,000 | 10 | Virtuoso | 150,000 |
| 5 | Master | 50,000 | 11 | Celebrity | 180,000 |
| 6 | Authority | 70,000 | 12+ | Famed … Legend | 230,000 … 1,000,000 |
Rank 1 is Amateur, not "Basic." 50,000 proficiency is Master; 70,000 is Authority. Rank-ups are free in this build, your only cost is the labor you pour into recipes. Higher rank makes labor go further (a flat efficiency benefit), but the exact per-rank labor-reduction percentage is not exposed in the server data, so treat any specific "% saved at rank X" claim as unverified.
How recipes are gated. Each recipe carries an actability_limit, the proficiency you need to use it. A value of 0 means craftable from the start. The thresholds line up exactly with the rank caps above. For these two vocations:
| Vocation | Gate range | What's actually gated |
|---|---|---|
| Handicrafts | 0 to 230,000 | 338 of 587 recipes are open from rank 1; gates climb on high-tier accessories and Rank 2/3 lunagems |
| Printing | 0 to 70,000 | Most books are open; gates are bulk paper (5,000), regrade scrolls (10,000 to 20,000), spellbooks (50,000), language book (70,000 = Authority) |
Labor cost is set per recipe (the consume_lp value on the underlying skill). In Handicrafts it ranges from 7 labor (entry traps) up to 500 (Rank 3 lunagems). In Printing it ranges from 3 labor (paper) up to 1,000 (the Ayanad …smithing scrolls), with the language book itself at 100 labor.
For the full vocation system, labor pool, rank mechanics, and the Anya gate, see the Crafting Guide.
Handicrafts: Stations & Skills
Handicrafts is built around the Handicraft Kiln (and its upgraded Regal Handicraft Desk), but a large share of recipes are portable, done straight from the proficiency window with no fixed station, or from Mirage Isle.
| Station | Recipes | What it makes |
|---|---|---|
| (portable / no station) | 244 | Lures, simple decor, many accessories, basic instruments |
| Handicraft Kiln (564) | 218 | Jewelry, lunagems, traps, lanterns, the main bench |
| Regal Handicraft Desk (2240) | 53 | Higher-tier rods and accessories (e.g. Archeum rod) |
| Proven Warrior Workbench (7088) | 30 | Honor-medal accessories and instruments |
| Equipment Designer's Workbench (9351) | 25 | Mixed high-tier accessory work |
| Soulforged Anvil (9430) | 9 | Top-tier accessory synthesis |
| Distorted Dimension Workbench (6795) | 3 | "Of the Ancients" Abyssal accessories |
The work is split across several skills, all of which read as Handicrafts in your proficiency window:
| Skill | Role |
|---|---|
| Make Handicraft / Craft Item (14693 to 14697, 21581, 27920) | Decor, fishing rods, traps, general goods |
| Craft Accessory (19173 and family) | Necklaces, earrings, rings |
| Craft Rank 1/2/3 Lunagem (25045 / 25046 / 25047) | Socketable stat stones |
| Craft Musical Instrument (12128 and family) | Lutes, flutes, faction/skillset anthems |
Accessories & Jewelry
Accessories are the highest-value Handicrafts output, necklaces, earrings and rings that everyone equips. The crafted line follows the same Apprentice → … → Ayanad upgrade ladder used by armor and weapons (see Gear Progression), starting from a "Sealed Apprentice's" base piece.
The base-tier pieces cost 100 labor each at no proficiency gate (verified):
| Product | Item ID | Craft | Key inputs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sealed Apprentice's Necklace | 24014 | 5329 | 3 Starlight Archeum Dust, 5 Diluted Stone Polish, 1 Amethyst |
| Sealed Apprentice's Earring | 24009 | 5334 | (gemstone + archeum dust + polish family) |
| Sealed Apprentice's Ring | 24019 | 5339 | (gemstone + archeum dust + polish family) |
From there the accessory upgrades consume the previous piece plus escalating Archeum, exactly like the cloth/plate/leather armor chains.
Gem cutting. Handicrafts also cuts the raw gemstones used across crafting. The signature recipe combines all six cut gems into a Prismatic Diamond (item 31810) at the Handicraft Kiln, 100 labor (craft 2625): 1 each of Amethyst, Topaz, Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald and Diamond. Those individual gems come from Mining.
Endgame accessory lines include the honor-medal Proven Warrior necklaces (ranks 1 to 8, crafted at the Proven Warrior Workbench from Warrior's Medals) and the Abyssal "of the Ancients" pieces, e.g. the Venom Fang Pendant (item 28232, craft 5617, 50 labor at the Distorted Dimension Workbench), which eats 12 Abyssal Crystal + 56 Abyssal Shard + 2 Starlight Archeum Crystal.
Lunagems
Lunagems are the stat-boost stones you socket into gear (sockets open at the Grand grade, see Gear Progression). Crafting them is pure Handicrafts, done at the Handicraft Kiln, and the three ranks scale sharply in cost and proficiency.
| Rank | Skill | Labor | Proficiency gate | Example output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rank 1 | Craft Rank 1 Lunagem (25045) | 50 | 0 (open) | Clear Fire Lunagem: Strong Blow (30907) |
| Rank 2 | Craft Rank 2 Lunagem (25046) | varies | mid-tier | (Vivid-tier stones) |
| Rank 3 | Craft Rank 3 Lunagem (25047) | 500 | 50,000 (Master) | Lucid Fire Lunagem: Strong Blow (30929) |
Worked example, Rank 1 (craft 6278): 10 Fire Lunarite (item 31009) + 1 Coin → 1 Clear Fire Lunagem: Strong Blow. Lunarite is the raw stone you feed in; each lunagem flavor (Fire, etc.) has its own lunarite.
Rank 3 stacks tiers on top of each other (craft 6298): 11 Fine Fire Lunarite + 1 Vivid Fire Lunagem (the Rank 2 result) + 1 Anya Ingot + 10 Coin → 1 Lucid Fire Lunagem: Strong Blow, at 500 labor. Note the Anya Ingot, high-rank lunagems pull in the Anya-tier metals from Mining's Master-gated Anya veins.
Important: the act of socketing a lunagem into gear (and removing one) is an item action, not a Handicrafts recipe, you don't need the vocation to slot a stone you bought, only to make it.
Musical Instruments
Instruments are a uniquely roleplay-friendly Handicrafts line. They range from simple wooden pieces to skillset-themed "anthems."
| Product | Item ID | Craft | Labor | Inputs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice's Meadow Lute | 20480 | 5257 | 100 | 5 Sunlight Archeum Dust, 8 Lumber, 5 Diluted Wood Finish |
| Apprentice's Lake Flute | 20493 | 5270 | 100 | (lumber + finish family) |
| Anthem of Battlerage | 35570 | 7367 | 100 | 300 Warrior's Medal, 1 Coin |
| Croon of Shadowplay | 35571 | 7368 | 100 | (honor-medal recipe) |
| Aria of Archery | 35572 | 7369 | 100 | (honor-medal recipe) |
There's a themed instrument for each of the 10 skillsets, Anthem of Battlerage, Nocturne of Witchcraft, March of Defense, Ballad of Auramancy, Dirge of Occultism, Aria of Archery, Fantasia of Sorcery, Croon of Shadowplay, and so on (crafted at the Proven Warrior Workbench from Warrior's Medals). For the skillset names themselves, see Classes & Skillsets.
Fishing Tools & Rods
Every fishing rod, hook, lure and trap on the server is a Handicrafts product, making this vocation the natural partner to Fishing. Rods are assembled from a frame + hook + line + reel; the frame/hook/line/reel components are themselves Handicrafts items.
| Product | Item ID | Craft | Station | Labor | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wrapped Bamboo Fishing Rod | 27328 | 5515 | Handicraft Kiln | 100 | 0 |
| Wrapped Steel Fishing Rod | 27671 | 5586 | Handicraft Kiln | 100 | 10,000 (Amateur+) |
| Wrapped Archeum Fishing Rod | 27674 | 5589 | Regal Handicraft Desk | 100 | 40,000 (Expert+) |
| Wrapped Frozen Wave Fishing Rod | 35135 | 7064 | Regal Handicraft Desk | 100 | 90,000 (Champion+) |
Assembling the entry rod (craft 5515): 1 Bamboo Fishing Pole Frame + 1 Sharp Fishing Hook + 1 Basic Fishing Line + 1 Wooden Reel + 1 Coin → 1 Wrapped Bamboo Fishing Rod. The Archeum rod (craft 5589) swaps in the Archeum frame, Crafted Hook, Reinforced Line and Gilt Reel for 8 Coin, and needs 40,000 proficiency (Expert rank).
Lures are cheap, bulk-made and portable (no station). Yellow Lure (craft 5547): 1 Topaz + 1 Archeum Ingot → 10 Yellow Lure, 10 labor. Green/Blue/Red lures follow the same pattern with different gems.
Traps like the Small Bamboo Trap (item 4867, craft 89) cost just 7 labor: 10 Bamboo Stalk + 1 Chum + 2 Coin at the Handicraft Kiln (this one gates at 10,000 proficiency).
House Decor & Lanterns
A huge slice of Handicrafts, and the reason roleplayers and homeowners keep the vocation maxed, is house decor. These are made with the Make Handicraft skill, most at 10 labor, many portable.
| Product | Item ID | Craft | Inputs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Lotus Lantern | 25684 | 174 | 1 Home Lighting Design, 2 Lumber, 1 Paper, 2 Congealed Oil, 1 Coin |
| White Lotus Lantern | 25685 | 176 | (lantern family) |
| Lotus Lantern Pillar | 25686 | 178 | (lantern family) |
| Gold Inlay Teapot | 8183 | 414 | 5 Stone Brick, 1 Golden Wool |
| Ocean Blue Jar | 8182 | 413 | (decor family) |
| Bluewing Vase | 8184 | 415 | (decor family) |
| Sun and Moon Vase | 8185 | 416 | (decor family) |
Notice that decor recipes consume Paper (the Lotus Lantern needs it), one of many places Printing's output feeds back into Handicrafts. For where to place all this, see Housing & Realm.
Printing: Stations & Skills
Printing is the smaller vocation (109 recipes) but punches above its weight: it produces a base material (paper), the regrade scrolls everyone needs, spellbooks, lore books, and the language manuals.
| Station | Role |
|---|---|
| Paper Press (6312) | Paper and bulk paper |
| Printing Press (6311) | Books, journals, regrade scrolls, the language book |
| Autumn Lore Book (9212) | The bulk of the lore-book catalogue (45 recipes, the largest single Printing station) |
| Regal Printing Press (6872) | Higher-tier scrolls and spellbooks |
| Multipurpose Workbench (8000129) | Bulk paper + bulk regrade scrolls (Master-gated) |
| Disciple's Workbench (8043) | Ayanad smithing/armor/accessory scrolls |
Most book recipes use the Printing skill (21858) at 25 labor with no proficiency gate, you can print most of the lore library from rank 1. The gated recipes are the materials and scrolls.
Paper, The Foundation Material
Paper (item 27278) is to Printing what Ingots are to Metalwork: a base material that countless downstream recipes consume, the language book, decor, and more.
| Product | Item ID | Craft | Station | Output | Labor | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper | 27278 | 2841 | Paper Press | 2 | 3 | 0 |
| Paper (bulk) | 27278 | 9000472 | Paper Press | 10 | 15 | 0 |
| Paper (mass) | 27278 | 8000646 | Multipurpose Workbench | 20 | 30 | 50,000 (Master) |
| Fine Paper | 8369 | 2843 | (portable) | 1 | 3 | 0 |
The entry recipe (craft 2841): 1 Lumber + 2 Coin → 2 Paper. Lumber comes from Carpentry's Sawmill Station (Log → Lumber); see the Crafting Guide for that chain. As with the rest of the game, bulk recipes save clicks, not labor, 10× output costs 10× labor.
Regrade Scrolls & Spellbooks
Printing is where the consumables for the regrade system are made. (The act of regrading gear is a separate item interaction, these recipes only make the scrolls themselves.)
| Product | Item ID | Craft | Station | Labor | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blank Regrade Scroll | 28305 | 5622 | Paper Press | 10 | 5,000 |
| Weapon Regrade Scroll | 28298 | 5623 | Printing Press | 50 | 10,000 (Amateur+) |
| Armor Regrade Scroll | 28299 | 5624 | Printing Press | 50 | 10,000 |
| Accessory Regrade Scroll | 31928 | 6785 | Printing Press | 50 | 10,000 |
| Grinding Guardian Scroll | 38707 | 9433 | Printing Press | 10 | 10,000 |
| Superior Grinding Guardian Scroll | 38708 | 9434 | Regal Printing Press | 30 | 20,000 (Novice+) |
| Spellbook: Unstoppable Will | 42162 | 9377 | Regal Printing Press | 50 | 50,000 (Master) |
| Ayanad Weaponsmithing Scroll | 40091 | 8000483 | Disciple's Workbench | 1,000 | 50,000 (Master) |
The Weapon Regrade Scroll (craft 5623): 1 Sunpoint + 1 Blank Regrade Scroll + 2 Coin → 1 Weapon Regrade Scroll. The Blank Regrade Scroll it consumes (craft 5622): 10 Paper + 2 Dawn Lake Light Essence + 2 Coin → 2 Blank Regrade Scrolls. So the full chain is Lumber → Paper → Blank Scroll → Weapon Regrade Scroll, three Printing steps deep. For grade mechanics and what these scrolls do, see Gear Progression.
Books, Lore & Indices
Printing prints the game's lore library, journals, histories, travel diaries, almost all at 25 labor, no gate, using the Printing skill (21858). The titles below are made at the Printing Press (6311); a separate, larger set of lore books is made at the Autumn Lore Book station (9212). A sample of what's craftable:
| Book | Item ID | Craft |
|---|---|---|
| Bloody Bhiskia: War Histories | 27567 | 5577 |
| Iyor's Complete Travel Journal | 27897 | 5605 |
| Tales of the Twelve: The Gods and the Heroes | 30005 | 6056 |
| Humanity's Naval History | 35106 | 7062 |
| Taking Wing: Glider History | 35034 | 7060 |
| Orchidna's Journals: Kyprosa | 42463 | 9439 |
| Tyrenos's Index | 34242 | 6888 |
These books are flavor and collection items, ideal for furnishing a library, in-character study, or completing reading sets. The Golden Library Index (item 31778, craft 6781) prints 10 at a time for 10 labor.
Language Books: Cross-Faction Speech
This is the headline reason a roleplayer learns Printing. The Art of Language (item 27271) is the book that, used with a language tutor, teaches your character a new language, letting you read and speak the opposing faction's tongue instead of seeing garbled text.
The in-game item text confirms it: "When used with a language tutor, this book can teach someone a new language. Note: Even at max proficiency in a foreign language, you'll still make some mistakes."
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Product | The Art of Language (item 27271) |
| Craft | 2842 |
| Station | Printing Press (6311) |
| Labor | 100 |
| Proficiency gate | 70,000 = Authority rank |
| Inputs | 50 Paper (27278) + 5 Memory Ink (4053) + 5 Leather (16327) + 14 Coin |
This is the highest-gated recipe in Printing, you need to reach Authority (70,000 proficiency) before you can print it. That makes a maxed Printer a genuinely valuable person on a roleplay server: they're the supply line for everyone who wants to break the language barrier.
There is also a Translation Manual (item 40848, craft 9100, 25 labor, Printing Press), but it is a quest utility, not a faction-language teacher. Its item text states it "neutralizes the dangerous energy in Tyrenos's Index and lifts the Poisoned Page debuff," so don't confuse it with The Art of Language.
Reagent notes. The Art of Language needs Paper (Printing, above), Leather (Leatherwork's Leather Workbench, 3 Pelt → 1 Leather), and Memory Ink. Plan a small supply chain before you commit the 100 labor per book.
Worked Examples
Example 1, Your first fishing rod (Handicrafts, no gate). Gather/buy the four components, then at the Handicraft Kiln run craft 5515: 1 Bamboo Fishing Pole Frame + 1 Sharp Fishing Hook + 1 Basic Fishing Line + 1 Wooden Reel + 1 Coin → 1 Wrapped Bamboo Fishing Rod, for 100 labor. The frame, hook and reel are themselves cheap Handicrafts pieces, so a fully self-sufficient Fisher runs Handicrafts as a sidecar.
Example 2, A stack of lures for a fishing session. Portable, no station, 10 labor: craft 5547 turns 1 Topaz + 1 Archeum Ingot into 10 Yellow Lure. One gem and one ingot, ten lures, cheap enough to keep your tacklebox full.
Example 3, Printing a Weapon Regrade Scroll from scratch. Three Printing steps: (a) Sawmill 3 Log → 1 Lumber (Carpentry); (b) Paper Press, craft 2841, 1 Lumber → 2 Paper; (c) Paper Press, craft 5622, 10 Paper + 2 Dawn Lake Light Essence → 2 Blank Regrade Scrolls (needs 5,000 proficiency); (d) Printing Press, craft 5623, 1 Sunpoint + 1 Blank Scroll → 1 Weapon Regrade Scroll (needs 10,000 proficiency). Budget roughly 60+ labor across the chain, plus the Sunpoint currency.
Example 4, The endgame goal: The Art of Language. Once you've ground Printing to Authority (70,000), run craft 2842 at the Printing Press: 50 Paper + 5 Memory Ink + 5 Leather + 14 Coin → 1 The Art of Language, 100 labor. Hand it to a player learning your faction's tongue, or sell it, it's one of the few crafted items that directly changes how someone experiences the game's roleplay.
On Rookery Isles
A few server-specific truths to act on:
- Both crafting vocations are usable at any character level, but world gathering requires Level 52. Handicrafts and Printing themselves are never character-level-gated, so you can smelt, process, and craft at any level if you have the materials. World gathering is different: Mining, Logging, Gathering, Farming, Husbandry and Fishing all require Character Level 52 on Rookery (the client enforces this from its in-pak data). Since most raw materials for these crafts come from gathering, a fully self-supplied crafting career begins at Level 52, though you can craft earlier from purchased or traded materials. The crafting gates themselves are by proficiency, never by character level.
- Master is 50,000 proficiency; Authority is 70,000. Older guides (and some public wikis) use a wrong "Basic / Novice / Veteran / Expert / Authority / Master" ladder with Master at 70 to 90k. On this server the verified ladder starts at Amateur and Master is the 50,000 cap. The Art of Language gates at Authority (70,000), the single highest Printing gate.
- **It is Handicrafts (with the s), Printing, Metalwork and Leatherwork**, never "Metalworking"/"Leatherworking." Use the in-game labels.
- Bulk recipes save clicks, not labor. A 10×-output recipe costs 10× the labor. Bulk is purely a convenience.
- Erenor and Hiram gear do not exist in this build. The top crafted tier is Ayanad; Printing's "Ayanad …smithing Scroll" recipes feed that tier, not a higher one.
